Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to James Underwood. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi James, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
As a home inspector, I overcame imposter syndrome by focusing on continuous learning and professional development. I recognized that the field of home inspection is vast and constantly evolving, so I committed myself to staying updated on industry standards, regulations, and best practices. Moreover, seeking mentorship and guidance from experienced colleagues helped me gain confidence in my abilities and validate my expertise. By consistently delivering thorough and accurate inspections, I built trust with clients and colleagues, reinforcing my sense of belonging in the profession. Embracing challenges as opportunities for growth and viewing mistakes as learning experiences also played a crucial role in overcoming imposter syndrome and establishing myself as a competent and reliable home inspector.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I have been doing Home Inspections since 2012 and have been involved with the real- estate industry since I was a kid. Having inspected over 6,000 homes in West Michigan which brings experience and knowledge to guarantee a quality inspection. Before inspecting homes, I managed rental properties, and worked in the automobile service industry. I take pride in providing a thorough inspection as if my own family would be living in the house.
Over the years I have met many families, first time home buyers, and real estate investors and with each inspection. I strive to provide clients with as much information and knowledge of their home to give them a better understanding of the condition of their investment. In addition we strive to give back to the local communities and are involved with non-profit organizations to educate potential homeowners.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Integrity – Attention to detail – Communication skills
My best advice would be to consult a business coach for 6 months and bypass so many challenges first time business owners face.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My journey to becoming a successful home inspector has been profoundly shaped by the unwavering support and guidance of my wife and business coach. Their encouragement and belief in my abilities have been instrumental in overcoming challenges and developing the essential skills and knowledge required for this profession. My wife’s steadfast encouragement and understanding have provided me with the emotional foundation necessary to navigate the demands of starting and growing a business. Additionally, my business coach’s expertise and strategic insights have been invaluable in honing my entrepreneurial skills and navigating the complexities of the home inspection industry. Together, they have been my pillars of strength, empowering me to pursue excellence in my career as a home inspector.
