How Termite Inspections Work

A Termite Inspection is a noninvasive examination of the exterior and interior of a structure in search of evidence of termites and other Wood Destroying Organisms or conditions susceptible to WDO damage.

Termite Inspections are also referred to as Structural Pest Control Inspections.

“Wood Destroying Organisms”  is a broad term used to describe an Insect (termites, wood boring beetles, carpenter ants, carpenter bee, etc.) or fungi (dry rot, white rot, poria incrassate, etc.) which eats or destroys wood.

During a Termite Inspection we are looking for a variety of items that indicated presents of termites or conditions that could attract termites or other WDOs.  Some examples include:

  • Wood to soil contact
  • Moist or wet conditions
  • Discarded wings from termites
  • Shelter tubes on interior walls, floors, and ceilings
  • Entry holes in wood
  • Fine Saw Dust
  • Discolored and Damaged wood

Yes!  Termites can be hard to detect because they tend to avoid the open air and bright lights.  Termites often stay underground or within the wood and are not visible from the finished surfaces.

Best ways to prevent Termites and other WDO is to:

  1. Eliminate untreated wood from contact with the soil. This could be wood posts, wood siding, or even wood debris in the crawl space.  All of these attract termites.
  2. Keep soil around the building and crawl space dry and well ventilated. This can be accomplished with proper drainage away from the building and properly ventilation of the crawl space under a house.  It is also importation to repair all leaky pipes.
  3. Lastly, have an inspection performed every 2 to 3 years by a trained professional. Buildings and surrounding conditions around properties are constantly changing.  It would be better to catch an issue early before it cost thousands of dollars to repair.
